LAND OF THE FIVE VILLAGES

Cinque Terre is not only a photographer’s delight, Cinque Terre is also famous for its fresh seafood. The towns are, after all, fishing villages! Sample pesto with your pasta, or try some fresh focaccia bread. Anchovies, frisceu, muscoli are another staple, and you'll find the way they're prepared in Cinque Terre most delightful.

We will also explore the old town of Monterosso along the seashore, the largest village of the five villages, hike to the top of Corniglia, shoot a sunset across the water in Riomaggiore and time allowing we’ll also enjoy a fun boat ride to the charming town of Portovenere and visit the historic Portofino by train at the other end of the Parco National delle Cinque Terre..

We will personally help you capture the best possible images during our Cinque Terre photography workshop and show you the best techniques to shoot any type of subject in different light conditions: sunrise, sunset, full midday sun, twilight and night.

Itinerary

This is a sample itinerary, our itineraries are subject to change depending on weather and other circumstance beyond our control. Changes in the itinerary are always made to provide our guests the best possible experience, in a secure and professional way.

Day One

This Cinque Terre Photo Tour starts and finishes in Varnazza (option to meet at La Spezia Train Station early afternoon). The charming village Varnazza will be our base for the next 4 nights. We will meet and greet with the rest of the group at 4pm in the hotel lobby, go through a quick orientation and discuss the next 4 days’ agenda. We’ll also give a short tutorial on correct exposure and the use of the camera’s histogram to get the perfect shot every time.

If the conditions for sunset and twilight photography are good, we will have an early dinner, and then we'll make our way up the mountain, so that we can arrive in time to our shooting spot to watch the sunset over the Mediterranean Sea and capture the ‘blue hour’. It is only a short hike up the hill to this gorgeous view point overlooking the mesmerising Italian Riviera, and towering directly above the town's photogenic little fishing harbour which offers a stellar anchor point for a wonderful composition. This is a magical place to photograph the sunset and blue hour.

Day Two - Four

For those who wish to experience the early light, Martial will take you to a pre-breakfast session. There are some great photo opportunity close by, the town is peaceful at this time of day, the air is fresh and the morning light is just magical!

After breakfast, we will make our way by train to a different part of Cinque Terre, and each day we'll explore another village.

We will spend 4 magical days visiting the iconic ‘Five Lands’ of Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia, Vernazza and Monterosso located in the Italian region of Liguria. All 5 villages are car free and are  connect by walking trails, trains, and boats, it is a great way to commute between locations and getting away from crowds.

Mid-day will provide opportunities for photography in the interior of the villages. This is a good time to find open shade for photographing the architectural facades. We will also use the mid-day hours for photo critiques and photography one-on-one guidance. We will personally help you capture the best possible images during our Cinque Terre photography workshop and show you the best techniques to shoot any type of subject in different light conditions: sunrise, sunset, midday, twilight, night, etc.

Every day, we will have breakfast at our hotel and have a big meal at dinner in one of the local Italian restaurants. Northern Italian food is delicious, so this will also be one of the highlights of this Cinque Terre photo tour. During the day, we will eat light, grab a freshly made sandwich or a brochette on a terrace, etc. to maximise our time for photography.

As we will be doing a lot of sunset and evening blue hour photography, with all this low-light photography, a good tripod is essential.

Day Five

This tour ends after breakfast. Easy public transportation to both La Spezia Train Station to Pisa and Florence or Milan via Genoa is available.

A perfect add-on before your Cinque Terre PHOTO TOUR is our ITALIAN DOLOMITES, VENICE PHOTO TOUR or join us on our 7-DAY TUSCANY IN THE SPING PHOTO TOUR.

Personal Items and Weather Conditions

Temperature range for this time of year: 15C to 25C in May and 18C to 25C in Sept – early October, but it can get very cold and humid.

Average monthly rain for this time of year: 3 day/ May and 4 day/ Sept

Two pairs of shoes: One sturdy pair for in the field that you can get wet if we have a rain day. One pair for evenings or the next day in case the first pair is not dry.

Light weight rain jacket and rain pants. You don’t have to go all out here, but it will also help you to keep warm at night. * I really suggest a rain jacket if nothing else, the rain gear will keep you dry when walking in the countryside in the early hours of the morning. I have a pair of Teflon rain pants & jacket, super light and perfect to keep in you camera bag in case of a sudden change in the weather.

Hat and sun screen protection.

Be organised and pack smart. Sturdy shoes, hat and sunscreen are essential. We will email you a more detailed and updated recommendation list on what to bring with your booking confirmation depending on the time of the years and weather conditions. I recommend packing a basic easy to grab jacket or lightweight rain coat, etc. in a smaller backpack or in your camera bag in case the weather changes suddenly.

A warm jacket, long trousers and a jumper or light jacket during spring & the late summer month is a must. It can get really cold late afternoon with the sea breeze all year round.

Please pack light, as we have limited amount of luggage space in the Van - one piece of luggage plus a camera bag per person. I usually travel with a 40x60cm case including my close and personal items, plus a backpack style camera bag. Laundry service is usually available in most hotel and accommodations. Some airlines are also now charging for more than one piece of checking luggage.

Equipment

Camera Equipment

Your favourite DSLR camera, a multi focal lens (i.e 18-70mm) or fix lens, the wider the angle the better (i.e 14, 18, 20mm full frame camera and 10 to 12mm cropped sensor camera), a medium to long-range lens (i.e. 80-300mm), plenty of memory cards and fully charged batteries. A small steady tripod & cable release for long exposure is essential. Don’t forget to bring your camera manual if you are not 100% sure about your camera functions.

Please note that for better results a recent DSLR digital camera is preferable (0-5yrs old) as technology changes. Polariser filter, Neutral Density and grabs filters are not a prerequisite but are great tools to have for long exposure and colour saturation.

This workshop is suitable for beginners and advanced photographers of all ages, however a good sense of humour and minimum fitness is recommended. Sturdy shoes, suitable warm cloths, drink bottle, a head torch and a good camera bag… remember, you will be the one carrying your own photography gears!
